What are the gold medal prospects for Guangdong athletes at the Paris Olympics?

At the upcoming Paris Olympics, 46 people from Guangdong have been selected to represent China's sports delegation, including 38 athletes and 7 coaches, medical scientists, and other team staff members, according to a recent press conference held by the Guangdong Sports Bureau.

Guangdong athletes make up about 9.4% of the Chinese delegation, competing in a wide range of events across 17 major categories, 20 subcategories, and 41 individual events, placing them among the top provinces in terms of participation.

The Guangdong team features experienced veterans such as five-time Olympic track and field athlete Liu Hong, as well as rising stars like 11-year-old skateboarder Zheng Haohao, who will be the youngest athlete in the Chinese delegation and will celebrate her 12th birthday on the day of the Olympic closing ceremony. The average age of the Guangdong athletes is 24, with 42% being born after 2000, showcasing the vibrant and youthful energy of Guangdong sports.

The performance of Guangdong athletes is highly anticipated. In the Women's Synchronized 3m Springboard event, world champion Chen Yiwen and her partner Chang Yani are expected to secure Guangdong's first Olympic gold at the Paris Olympics. Diving stars Quan Hongchan and Xie Siyi will compete again, aiming to defend their titles. Synchronized swimming twins Wang Liuyi and Wang Qianyi will strive for China's first Olympic gold in this sport. Additionally, Guangdong athletes in badminton, shooting, and tennis also have strong competitive potential. Notably, tennis players Wang Xinyu and Yuan Yue will represent Guangdong for the first time in Olympic singles and doubles events, showcasing the province's emerging tennis talent.
