South China Sea Fishing Festival held in Yangjiang, 800 ships set sail

The 20th South China Sea Fishing Festival was held on the morning of August 16 in Hailing Island, Yangjiang, bringing an end to the summer fishing ban of this year.

When the opening call was issued, more than 800 boats and ships at the Zhapo Fishing Port set sail for the ocean after a three-and-a-half-month break, starting a new round of "farming life" on the sea.

"I hope we can have a smooth sail and return with a full load," said Yang Yongshang, a member of the Zhapo Fishermen Committee, according to a report in Nanfang Daily.

First held in 2003, the Fishing Festival is an important event for the fishermen in which they celebrate the coming of fishing seasons and pray for a good harvest. The traditions of the festival include giving the opening call of the fishing season, offering sacrifices to the sea, and doing sailboat and sailboard performances.

Starting on May 1, the annual summer fishing ban aims to protect fish and other marine resources in China's surrounding waters during the summer season.

As early as a few days before the festival, the Zhapo Fishing Port had already been bustling with fishing boats from small to large. Fishermen were busy preparing supplies, checking and overhauling fishing boats, and replenishing tools and equipment, all looking forward to the arrival of the fishing season.
