Hailed as a theory that may pave the way for the fourth revolution in cancer, the book Tumor Ecosystem: An Ecological View of Cancer Growth and Survival has recently been published by the globally renowned publisher Springer Nature. It was written by Erwei Song and Phei Er Saw from the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University.

The book is the first comprehensive and systematic exposition of the theory of “tumor ecosystem”, which has been the essence of the scientific research of Song and his team for the past 20 years. The theory points out that cancer growth and survival depend on not only the communication between tumor cells and their surroundings, but they are also constantly communicating with the host inflammatory, immune, endocrine, and neuronal systems.
The book consists of four parts and 30 chapters. It details the in-depth crosstalks between the interactions and inter-relationship of various cells in local onco-spheres, interactions between different organs in distal onco-spheres, interactions between host and guests (i.e., microbes, virus, tumor cells) in systemic onco-spheres, and the application prospect of the tumor ecosystem in cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Bernard A. Fox, former president of the Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer, wrote the preface for the book. He believes that the concept of tumor ecosystem would pave the way for the fourth revolution in cancer, predicting the arrival of a new era of cancer treatment. He strongly recommends this book for all clinicians, researchers, and medical students to clearly understand the concept of tumors as an ecosystem, looking at cancer from an ecological view.
