On October 29th, the 2024 World Laureates Greater Bay Area Forum convened at One Pengrui in Guangzhou, bringing together Nobel Laureates and global thought leaders under the theme "Journey With the World." Jointly hosted by the Parkland Foundation and the WLA Foundation, the forum sought to amplify Guangzhou's role as a dynamic center for science and technology in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
The event was highlighted by talks from three distinguished Nobel Laureates, each sharing insights from their pioneering research journeys. The laureates included Professor Arieh Warshel, recipient of the 2013 Nobel Prize in Chemistry; Professor J. Michael Kosterlitz, awarded the 2016 Nobel Prize in Physics; and Professor Andre Geim, winner of the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics. Their discussions provided an in-depth look at some of the most significant advancements in their fields, sparking interest and dialogue around Guangzhou's expanding influence as an international innovation hub.
During the keynote sessions, the Nobel Laureates addressed a range of breakthrough topics: Professor Warshel discussed advances in artificial intelligence as they intersect with enzyme catalysis; Professor Kosterlitz shared reflections on his work with topological phase transitions; and Professor Geim delved into the unique properties and potential of graphene and other two-dimensional materials. These talks offered attendees unique insights into critical developments shaping the future of science.
The forum also featured an interactive session, allowing attendees—including business leaders, scientists, and youth representatives from across the Greater Bay Area—to engage directly with the Nobel Laureates. This hands-on exchange aimed to inspire the next generation of innovators and provided local industry leaders with valuable perspectives from the world's top scientists.
Speaking at the event, Guo Dongfeng, Secretary-General of the Parkland Foundation, underscored the foundation's dedication to advancing science and technology, facilitating international collaboration, and nurturing young talent. He affirmed that the foundation would continue to support the forum as a key platform for dialogue between Guangzhou and the world, strengthening international ties in science and driving innovation across the Greater Bay Area.
Additionally, One Pengrui has been designated as the forum's official venue, establishing it as a lasting bridge for scientific exchange and cooperation. This step reaffirms Guangzhou's commitment to fostering cutting-edge research and creating new pathways for global scientific collaboration.
