Singaporean policy specialist Kishore Mahbubani: China and Singapore sure to embrace more cooperation

On March 27, Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and his delegation arrived in Guangzhou for a 6-day visit to China. As one of the first foreign visitors after China's reopening, it reflects the good ties between China and Singapore at this stage, said Kishore Mahbubani, Distinguished Fellow at the Asia Research Institute of the National University of Singapore, in an interview with GDToday on March 28.

Mr. Mahbubani marked it "a positive signal" of further China-Singapore ties that Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and his delegation chose the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area as their first stop in China. "The Greater Bay Area is one of the most dynamic economic regions in China and the world. I'm confident there will be more collaboration between China and Singapore."

Lee and his delegation on March 28 visited the China-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City, a state-level bilateral cooperation project between China and Singapore. Mr. Mahbubani regarded the project as a good example of cooperation, as it gives full play to the advantages of both Singapore and Guangzhou.

Kishore Mahbubani is a Singaporean diplomat and geopolitical consultant who served as Singapore's Permanent Representative to the United Nations between 1984 and 1989, again between 1998 and 2004, and as President of the United Nations Security Council between 2001 and 2002. He served as founding dean at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy of the National University of Singapore (NUS) from 2004 until the end of 2017.
