The opening ceremony of 2023 Understanding China Conference (UCC) kicks off in Guangzhou on December 2."To enhance dialogue between the US and China in this new era, it is imperative that we should approach to exercise humility, curiosity, understanding, and empathy," John L. Thornton, Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Trustees of the Brookings Institution and Global Co-Chair of Asia Society, said at the opening ceremony of the conference.
Thornton listened to the speech delivered by Chinese President Xi Jinping in San Francisco, and commented "China is ready to be a partner and friend of the United States. He could not have been any more clear or straightforward."
