There are approximately 1,100 Chinese White Dolphins living in the Pearl River Estuary, and the population has been stable and improving from 2017 to 2021, according to a survey of the Pearl River Estuary Chinese White Dolphin National Nature Reserve.

The survey was conducted in three phases (2017-2018, 2018-2019 and 2019-2021). The result shows that the population of Chinese White Dolphins in the monitoring period was estimated to be around 1,100, mainly in adolescence and adulthood, accounting for 22-30%.
The Chinese White Dolphin population in the Pearl River Estuary Reserve was 937 during 2017-2018 and 800 during 2018-2019, and the proportion of juvenile dolphins sighted was less than 10%. During 2019-2021, the population of Chinese white dolphins had exceeded 1,100, and the number of young dolphins had reached 13%.

The increase in the Chinese White Dolphin population is related to the improvement of the marine environment in Guangdong Province. In recent years, Guangdong has been strengthening the protection of the marine ecological environment, the quality of which is gradually improving.
