In Ghana for nearly a year, what has Guangdong medical team done?

On February 10, the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the Republic of Ghana sent a letter of commendation highly appraising the 11th batch of the Chinese medical team to Ghana, with a total of 11 members from Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital.

The letter mentioned that since the team to Ghana arrived in March 2022, they have overcome difficulties such as delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, challenging conditions, and lack of medical services and supplies, and they have done their work wholeheartedly.

Their free clinics provided medical services for the people of Ghana, Chinese-funded enterprises, and embassy staff, and have saved the lives of many overseas Chinese.

As pointed out in the letter, the team members' superb medical skills and noble medical ethics have won heartfelt affirmation and a warm welcome from the Ministry of Health of Ghana, the China-Ghana Friendship Hospital, Chinese-funded enterprises and institutions, as well as overseas Chinese.

Since 2009, Guangdong has been entrusted by the National Health Commission to undertake the task of sending medical teams to foreign countries.

The 11th batch of the Chinese medical team to Ghana was selected by Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital, with a total of 11 members engaged in Anesthesiology, General Surgery, Cardiology, Radiology, Neurology, Acupuncture, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and Ophthalmology.

This team was established on July 26, 2021. All members established assistance goals at the outset after thorough research and group discussions.

With the efforts of all team members, the assistance to the China-Ghana Friendship Hospital (LEKMA Hospital) has achieved remarkable results.

1

General Surgery:

conducting more than 10 laparoscopic surgeries (previously only one per year); over 300 surgeries, including more than 40 orthopaedic surgeries, more than 200 obstetric surgeries, and more than 100 abdominal surgeries.

2

Internal Medicine:

pioneering a regular Monday outpatient clinic and Friday bedside teaching rounds, which trains a batch of doctors on rotations.

3

Obstetrics:

working together with acupuncture and physiotherapy to implement labour analgesia.

4

Ophthalmology:

finishing over 40 phacoemulsifications and intraocular lens implantations.

5

Anesthesiology:

supporting Orthopedics to complete more than 10 cases of internal fixation of fractures.

It is worth mentioning that the departments of General Surgery, Obstetrics (Gynecology), and Anesthesiology trained local doctors and nurses to complete the basic installation, disinfection, connection, and maintenance of laparoscopic instruments. They were sorted out, and corresponding accessories were purchased in China to ensure the normal use of the laparoscopic system. In addition to outpatient and bedside teaching rounds, the Department of Cardiology also provides echocardiography to local patients and routinely sends ECG reports every day.

In addition to clinical work, they have also been devoted to teaching and training local medical staff members.

In addition to helping the China-Ghana Friendship Hospital to improve its medical services, the medical team also helps treat infectious diseases.

They held two social welfare lectures on malaria, had over 20 cases of malaria treatment, and more than 50 cases of remote guidance on treatment and correction of treatment errors over the telephone.

The medical team received and visited more than 30 cases of COVID-19 patients, provided over 300 instances of telephone consultation and treatment guidance, treated more than 10 cases of typhoid fever patients, and gave two lectures on COVID-19 for enterprises.

They also treated more than 10 cases of patients with typhoid fever.

The outstanding performance of the 11th batch of medical teams to Ghana has won high recognition from the local people.

In addition, the medical team also pulled resources from local Chinese-funded enterprises to participate in offering assistance, and established a corporate charity fund.

They have also brought warmth to compatriots in Ghana, carry out one round of visit, and run six free clinics for overseas Chinese.
