Action plan sets to offer better public meteorological services in GBA

The Guangdong Provincial Government and the China Meteorological Administration have recently issued a three-year action plan for meteorological services in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), which sets the objectives for the quality of meteorological services in the GBA for the period from 2024 to 2026.

The plan aims to enhance the role of meteorology in protecting people's lives and safety, ensuring production and development, promoting prosperity, and creating a pleasant ecological environment.

Over the next three years, the GBA will enhance the ability to issue emergency early warning information and optimize public meteorological services. Precise weather services will be provided in the Guangdong-Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin.

Deepening international cooperation is one of the key objectives, which includes optimizing meteorological services for the Belt and Road Initiative partner countries.

The plan also emphasizes meteorological cooperation and information sharing in the GBA. This includes establishing the GBA branch of the World Meteorological Center(Beijing) and a high-level center for weather monitoring, warning, and forecasting. Additionally, the plan proposes the establishment of the GBA Academy of Meteorological Sciences and a meteorological information sharing platform.

The plan also aims to achieve key scientific and technological breakthroughs and promote innovation in meteorological science and technology. It specifies that the GBA will develop a precise weather monitoring network, build an intelligent meteorology cloud platform and an atmospheric science experimental base, improve the regional high-resolution numerical model system, and advance the development of intelligent forecasting technology.

The integrated development of meteorology in the GBA is also included in the plan. It states that the area will improve coordination mechanisms for early warning and emergency response, joint research on key core technologies, and meteorological data and information sharing mechanisms.
