Guangdong sees improvement in ecological environment

In 2021, the ratio of days with good air quality in Guangdong was 94.3%. And the average PM2.5 concentration has dropped to 22 micrograms per cubic meter, meeting the WHO phase 2 standard," Lu Xiulu, Director General of the Department of Ecology and Environment of Guangdong Province, announced at a press conference on June 23.

According to Lu, Guangdong has taken the lead in transitioning to a research model centered on ozone prevention and control. 

In terms of water environment quality, 527 dark and odorous water bodies in urban areas, such as Maozhou River and Lianjiang River, have been basically eliminated. In 2021, the proportion of areas with excellent water quality in coastal waters has reached 90.2%, soaring to a record high.

In addition, Pearl River Delta region has built the first national-level forest city cluster, and the forest coverage rate increased to 58.7%. As of 2021, the province's cumulative transaction volume and amount of carbon emission quota was 199.7 million tons and 4.61 billion RMB respectively.

"Guangdong is accelerating the construction of a low-carbon transportation system," stressed by Wu Daowen, Deputy Director General of the Guangdong Provincial Development and Reform Commission and head of the Energy Bureau of Guangdong Province

"We are vigorously promoting new energy vehicles, and have launched more than 270,000 new energy vehicles in 2021. To establish a low-carbon transportation infrastructure network, we have built 4,100 electric vehicle charging stations and 173,000 public charging piles."

Guangdong's urban living environment is changing as well. It has been constantly improving infrastructure modernization and enhancing the efficiency of urban domestic sewage treatment.

"Guangdong so far has built about 74,000 kilometers of urban domestic sewage pipe network," said Liu Genghui, Deputy Director General of the Department of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of Guangdong Province. "It currently can treat 29.47 million tons of urban domestic sewage a day, ranking first in China."
