Organized by the British Consulate-General in Guangzhou, a reception for celebrating the coronation of King Charles Ⅲ was held in Guangzhou, the capital city of Guangdong Province, on May 11.
On behalf of the province of Guangdong, Yuan Baocheng, Vice-Chairman of the Guangdong Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, extended congratulations to all British working and living in Guangdong.
He said, “As the forerunner and pioneer in China’s reform and opening-up, Guangdong has been engaging actively with British counterparts in friendly exchanges and fruitful cooperation.”
He said that both sides had launched cooperation in innovation, education, life science, financial services, creative industries, and especially in climate change and green, low-carbon development.
“Guangdong stands ready to join hands with our British friends in implementing a consensus reached by the leaders of the two nations, expanding and extending mutually beneficial cooperation in all areas,” he added.
“Guangzhou has its own special connection to the British Royal Family,” said Matt Moody, British Consul-General Guangzhou. “Queen Elizabeth II visited Guangzhou in 1986 during her state visit to China. The Queen visited several historical sites, including the Liuhua Lake Park and the Guangzhou Children’s Palace, strengthening ties between our two countries.”
He noted that trade between the UK and Guangdong reached the highest value in history, surpassing 22 billion USD last year. Companies from the UK have major investments in Guangdong in the fields of financial services, green energy, advanced manufacturing and biotechnology.
King Charles III, 74, ascended to the throne in September last year following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.
On May 6, he was crowned monarch of the United Kingdom (UK) and 14 other Commonwealth realms in the UK’s first coronation since 1953 at Westminster Abbey in central London.
