China-US joint efforts called to rise to global healthcare challenges

Co-organized by FAH-SYSU and the University of California at Berkeley (UC Berkeley), the The Pacific Rim Health Innovations Conference (PRHIC) 2022 is being held from September 21 to 24 both online and offline.

"Global healthcare challenges cannot be addressed without collective efforts by all of us. China and the US, the two great nations in the world, must shoulder the responsibilities and unite together for human health and well-being. The world calls for mutual understanding, communication, and most importantly, international collaboration." 

Xiao Haipeng, Executive Vice President of Sun Yat-sen University and President of The First Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University (FAH-SYSU) said at the opening ceremony of The Pacific Rim Health Innovations Conference (PRHIC) 2022 on September 21.

Co-organized by FAH-SYSU and the University of California at Berkeley (UC Berkeley), the PRHIC 2022 is being held from September 21 to 24 both online and offline.

The conference focuses on robotic surgery, digital health, and response to public health emergencies. It consists of four symposiums with different themes: "Global Lessons from COVID-19: Directions for Research and Interventions", "Robotic Surgery: Global Advances", "Advances in Health Informatics and Machine Learning: Reimagining the Use of Data for Health Care", and "Innovation in Digital Health Technology: Reshaping Health Care Delivery".

"During the next 4 days, participants will benefit from our collaboration in the areas of COVID-19, surgical robotics, health informatics and machine learning, as well as digital health innovation." Katherine Yelick, Vice Chancellor for Research of UC Berkeley, said in the opening speech.

Yelick added, "This information not only represents cutting-edge science, but is designed to advance the well-being and prosperity of the peoples of the Pacific Rim nations. It illustrates that our collaboration can lead to new health technology interventions for patients in China, the United States and around the globe."

Since the establishment of a partnership between FAH-SYSU and UC Berkeley in 2021, the two sides have carried out a series of activities in the fields of robotic surgery and digital health.  

Xiao Haipeng stressed that the conference would be a great opportunity to enhance international academic cooperation and exchange, facilitate the deep integration of big data and artificial intelligence with medical development, accelerate the gathering of talent and resources in medical innovation as well as to work together to improve the accessibility of medical services, the ability to diagnosis and treatment of critical and complicated diseases with the response to public health emergencies.

During the symposium with the theme of "Global Lessons from COVID-19", Jonna Mazet, Vice Provost - Grand Challenges at UC Davis, gave a keynote speech and shared the thoughts on using "One Health" concept to address the grand challenges of our time.

Brian Garibaldi, Director of Biocontainment Unit, Johns Hopkins University, shared the experience of Johns Hopkins in applying precision medicine to cope with the COVID-19 pandemic.  

Featuring experts from top institutions in the Pacific Rim countries, the conference has also invited medical institutions from the member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) countries. More than 100 overseas participants from 29 countries joined virtually and discussed promoting digital healthcare and innovation for human health and well-being, including Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, India, New Zealand, Italy, Turkey, Belarus, Thailand, Belarus, Georgia, Azerbaijan.

Speaking of the cooperation with BRI (Belt and Road Initiative) countries, Xiao pointed out that FAH-SYSU is now mainly helping to train talent from countries along the Belt and Road, "We communicate through exchanges in training and research."
