On December 22, the Academy of Meteorological Sciences of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area was inaugurated in Guangzhou, the capital city of Guangdong Province. Meanwhile, the first science advisory committee of the Academy was established.
It is learned that this is the first national science and technology innovation platform that the China Meteorological Administration has set up in South China. Its aim is to comprehensively enhance the effectiveness of the meteorological science and technology innovation system.
The Academy is centered on the Guangzhou Institute of Tropical and Marine Meteorology of the China Meteorological Administration. It integrates the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Weather Research Center for Monitoring Warning and Forecasting, the forecasting technology innovation center for monsoon and heavy rainfall in Jiangmen, the Foshan Tornado Research Center, and other meteorological research institutions.
The Academy has also launched an observation, experiment, and mechanism research center for tropical meteorology, a key technology research center for numerical forecasting in the tropical zone, a meteorological research center for tropical environment, as well as a center for research transformation and academic exchanges.
In recent years, Guangdong has been pushing forward the high-quality innovation of meteorological technology, with the meteorological departments of the province presiding over or participating in a total of 126 national science research projects. The province has independently developed the regional high-resolution numerical weather prediction model and the tropical regional assimilation model for the South China Sea, with the two models in leading positions in China
