Olympic music composer Chang Shilei: The Olympics changed my life

The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics is approaching, and many Olympic songs such as See you in Beijing and Together for a Shared Future are being discovered by more and more people. It is the Chinese composer Chang Shilei who wrote these songs. This isn't his first involvement in Olympic songwriting. Over the years, he has composed several songs for the Beijing 2008 Olympics Games and the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics Games.

In 2008, Chang Shilei, who was still studying in Shanghai, participated in the creation of You and me, the theme song for the opening ceremony of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Since then, he has started his own musical work in Beijing. "I'm definitely someone with an Olympic complex. The 2008 Beijing Olympics changed my life, and my music career started from there."

When it comes to writing songs for the Winter Olympics this time, he bluntly said that it was because his Olympic dream had not yet been fully awoken. "I regard See You in Beijing as a companion  to that of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, so I echoed the names of these two songs. Creating music is also my instinctive reaction. For me, it's not awake yet. I feel lucky, so I'm pretty happy."

Chang Shilei believes that his creative inspiration comes from life. "Mostly my experience of life, music is all my life. Inspiration is not the most reliable thing, but when it does come it is extremely reliable." He considers himself a very lucky man, cause his work was appreciated by the famous musician Chen Jingang in 2008. "I have the opportunity to meet you today because of the Olympics. I’ve had opportunities after working for so many years, and I still try to do the best when I am creating."

Knowing that these songs from the Winter Olympics are getting a lot of love, Chang Shilei said with a smile, "It has been a wonderful experience to have the opportunity to compose these songs. Now some people still like my songs and even create a gesture dancing for them. I think it will help me live better in the next life."

Chang Shilei will participate in the GDTV's Spring Festival Gala and perform Wan, a song which was co-created with musician Wang Binjiu for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area in September last year. When it comes to the creation of Wan, he believes that the Greater Bay Area is a very beautiful concept. "I feel like it's a very good outlook, a focus."
