Guangzhou re-elected as co-president of World Association of Major Metropolises

Guangzhou was re-elected as the co-president of the World Association of the Major Metropolises at the 14th Metropolis World Congress, held in Brussels from June 12 to 15 local time.

Dakar of Senegal was elected as the president city and Guangzhou will lead the committee from 2024 to 2026, along with five other co-president cities including Brussels of Belgium, Tehran of Iran, Seoul of South Korea, Montevideo City of Uruguay, and Barcelona metropolitan area of Spain.

Zhang Yajie, vice chairman of Guangzhou Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), addressed at the congress that Guangzhou has been able to strengthen cooperation with global metropolises, share insight into sustainable development and jointly improve the capacity of urban governance since the city joined Metropolis 30 years ago.

She added that Guangzhou has successfully held 5 sections of the Guangzhou Award, which has collected 1,361 outstanding cases of urban innovation from 556 cities in 96 countries and regions, providing a useful reference for global cities.

More than 150 mayors and 2000 representatives, including government officials, scholars and business elites from more than 600 cities of 118 countries and regions attended the congress. They had discussions on inter-municipal cooperation and global challenges in the four-day congress through online and offline formats.

Founded in 1985, Metropolis is an international organization and essential platform for multilateral cooperation among major cities, developed with the rise of exchanges among international cities. Guangzhou has been a Metropolis member since 1993 and became the first Chinese board member of Metropolis in 1996. Guangzhou chaired the World Congress of Metropolis from 2020 to 2022 for the first time and became the first Chinese city to hold the position.
