GAFA student plants "flowers" to beautify city's corners

Tulips, corn poppies, chrysanthemum, little mushrooms... Recently, on the street of Nanting Village in Guangzhou's Panyu District, people may encounter some furry "flowers" in damaged parts of corners, walls and even the ground.

These are handmade wool felt flowers created by Luo Shengtian, a student at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts (GAFA). Many netizens also praised the works, calling them the "gentle patches for the city".

Luo lives in Nanting Village. "The lanes in the village are narrow, and many people and cars are passing by every day. I sometimes may bump into the missing corners when I ride by," he said. That inspired him to come up with the idea for the "flower project". "A soft felt might prevent some of the hazards."

Before fixing the damaged corners, Luo would make flowers the size of coins out of wool felt. Make "grass" with clay, glue and other materials, then fix the felt flower on it. "It only takes about 10 minutes to make a flower," Luo said.

What he has done has won him a lot of support. The owners of the shops, whose walls had been repaired, expressed their gratitude; several people got in touch with him and wanted to join in his "flower project". Luo, who originally just wanted to repair several damaged corners of Nanting Village, decided to set up a team with his friends and provide instructional videos for teammates, in a bid to make wool felt flowers for more areas.

Now, the team attracts more and more people, including people living in Guangzhou, Shanghai, Xi'an and other cities, as well as overseas students in the UK, New Zealand and South Korea.

"We can decorate the city and warm others in this way," Luo said, "I feel very happy to be able to pass on warmth in my own way."

In June, Luo will graduate and leave Nanting Village. "But the flower project will not end. I will continue to work on it in the future."
