Recently, Grandmaster Keith R. Kernspecht, founder and head of the European WingTsun Organisation (EWTO), visited Guangdong's Foshan for cultural exchange about kung fu. Jesper Lundqvist from Copenhagen, Denmark, a kung fu culture promoter who has lived in Foshan for over 10 years, accompanied Kernspecht on his trip.
As a disciple of Leung Ting (a student of Leung Sheung and was personally instructed by lp Man), Kernspecht opened over 6,000 Wing Chun schools in Europe and is hailed as the father of WingTsun in Europe.
Known as the "city of kung fu", Foshan is the preeminent birthplace of Southern styles of Chinese martial arts. Wong Fei-hung, a famous martial artist, and Ip Man, a grandmaster of Wing Chun, both came from Foshan. These days, more than 50 types of martial arts still exist here, and there are over 10,000 martial arts practitioners and more than 100,000 people involved in martial arts exercises.
On the first day of his trip to Foshan, Kernspecht discovered the life of Ip Man and has a new understanding of Foshan Wing Chun after his conversation with local kung fu teachers. He suggested people in Foshan publish a book to introduce the richness of different styles of martial arts there, while he planned to arrange more cultural exchange activities for his European students in this city as well.
