A network of 'cycling highways’ in Limburg makes bicycles a fully-fledged alternative to cars.

Limburg boasts the cycling paths of the best quality in Flanders. The cycling network in Limburg covers over 2000 km. 23 ‘cycling highways’ form the backbone of this network, and the Province of Limburg is currently investing heavily in their construction. Cycling highways are separated from other traffic as much as possible to boost the safety and comfort of cyclists. In all, the cycling highways cover 463 km. The key to their success? In the past, bicycles were used mostly to cover distances of no more than 5 km. Today, electric bicycles have become increasingly popular and they are used more and more, both for commuting and for leisure. As a result, people are using bicycles even for longer trips, mainly as an alternative to cars on roads prone to congestion. Cycling is, now more than ever before, seen as a convenient and comfortable mode of transport. The construction of these cycling highways has made cycling an even more attractive option. After all, cycling results in less congested roads, healthier air and economic growth. In a nutshell, extra investments in sustainable mobility are beneficial to all the people of Limburg.
