The 'chill vibe' of China's post-2000s athletes sparks joy at Paris Olympics

The chill vibe of young Chinese athletes has been making waves on the first day of the Paris Olympics. Looking at the list of the Chinese delegation, Quan Hongchan, born in 2007, is already participating in her second Olympics, along with Chen Yuxi and Liu Qingyi, born in 2005, Pan Zhanle, born in 2004, Zheng Qinwen, born in 2002, Sun Yingsha, Wang Chuqin, and Li Wenwen, born in 2000... Zheng Haohao, born in 2012 and only 11 years old, is the youngest athlete in this Olympics. At the Paris Olympics, these Chinese Post-2000s, who not only possess exceptional skills but also bring various funny and relaxed traits, deserve more anticipation.

Sheng Lihao and Huang Yuting won the first gold medal for the Chinese delegation in the 10m Air Rifle Mixed Team event . Before the competition, when the official Weibo account of CCTV News tagged their Weibo IDs, people found that Sheng Lihao's ID was "Just by Eating" (literally translated from "光靠吃饭就"), and Huang Yuting's was "Ah Tiao Ben Tiao" (阿条本条). The IDs of another pair of Chinese athletes, Han Jiayu and Du Linshu, were also quite lovely. After winning the championship, the news headline, combined with Sheng Lihao's ID, became "Just by Eating Won the Championship," leading to playful remarks like, "Was this planned in advance?" "Do you believe in the power of a chill attitude? I do! Just by eating, you can win a gold medal!" Their amusing IDs, paired with their anime-style avatars, also led some to joke: "I thought it was a gathering of anime characters, but it turned out to be the Olympics."

The 17-year-old Huang Yuting's panda pendant on her 17-jin air rifle (approximately 8.5 kg or 18.7 lbs), and her white hairpin, were as eye-catching as Yang Qian's little yellow duck hairpin at the Tokyo Olympics. As has been said, "Wear the cutest panda, aim for the fiercest shot." Although the competition result was decided in the last shot, there was no change in emotion on Huang Yuting and Sheng Lihao's faces. Whether aiming or celebrating, they were as calm as the sloth in "Zootopia " — displaying an enviable chill vibe.

Newcomers to the Olympics, Chen Yiwen and Chang Ya'ni, won the championship in the women's synchronised 3m springboard event . After that, Chen Yiwen carried Chang Ya'ni in her arms . This infectious scene left international competitors in awe, but they soon joined in the celebration. The runners-up and the third-place teams also hoisted their partners on their backs, turning the podium into a stage of joy, making it the highlight of the day.

These four champions—Huang Yuting born in September 2006, Sheng Lihao in December 2004, Chang Ya'ni in December 2001, and Chen Yiwen in June 1999—are three Post-2000s and one almost Post-2000s. The average age of the Chinese delegation at the Paris 2024 Olympics is 25, indicating a significant presence of Post-2000s athletes. At the Tokyo Olympics, the chill demeanor of the Post-2000s Chinese athletes, in addition to their performance, left a lasting impression. They train with the same rigor as their predecessors and compete with the same tenacity, yet they carry the unique mark of their generation, resonating and connecting with a younger audience.
