High-profile dragon boat race to be held in Guangzhou on June 17

The 2023 Guangzhou International Dragon Boat Invitational Tournament, a highly anticipated dragon boat event, will be held on June 17 (Saturday) on the Pearl River section between the North Gate Square of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) and the Guangzhou Bridge.

The Invitational Tournament consists of four events: traditional dragon boat 600-meter straight race, 22-person dragon boat 600-meter straight race, colorful dragon boat race and dragon parade. The preliminaries and semi-finals will be held from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, and the launching ceremony, finals and awards will be held from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

This year, a total of 125 dragon boat teams and nearly 5,000 athletes will participate in the competition. Most of the athletes come from the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, foreign consulates and chambers of commerce in Guangzhou, universities, sister cities, and counterpart cities.

In addition to dragon boat races, intangible cultural heritage activities will also be an important part of this event. From June 17 to 24, an intangible cultural heritage exhibition featuring dragon boat culture, traditional art, traditional sculpture, traditional food, and traditional medicine will be held at the Xinghai Concert Hall Square, providing audiences with a diverse and immersive interactive experience.

Guangzhou International Dragon Boat Invitational Tournament is a traditional dragon boat race in Guangzhou. It originated in 1985 and is a long-established and popular traditional event.

On the day of the event, the waters of the race course will be closed to sailing. Temporary traffic control will be implemented on Qingbo Road, Tanyue Street, Haishan Street, Yuchang Street and North Gate Square of SYSU. Residents who want to watch the race should choose public transportation as much as possible.
