Momentum has been injected to reinforce the role that the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area has played in boosting cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking countries, according to the latest announcement at the 6th Ministerial Conference of the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries (Macao) on April 22.

The announcement, together with the Strategic Plan for Economic and Trade Cooperation (2024-2027) between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries that would be inked later, was one significant achievement for the 6th Ministerial Conference of the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries (Macao), known as Forum Macao, which is held from April 21 to April 23.
The announcement consolidated Macao's role as a commercial and trade service cooperation platform between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries. More specifically, the Guangdong-Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin will be supported in establishing a financial service platform for China and Portuguese-speaking countries. Macao will also develop an international bond market priced by RMB and MOP with the support of the Hengqin.
Besides, Macao will be supported in establishing a platform for technology cooperation, with a priority on supporting qualified cooperation projects to be implemented in Hengqin. A mechanism to cooperate with Portuguese-speaking countries in audio and video production will be forged.
The meeting is expected to outline the development vision and direction for cooperation between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries for up to 2027, consolidating Macao's role as a commercial and trade service cooperation platform between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries.
Hengqin is located in the southern part of Zhuhai City in Guangdong Province, just across the Macao SAR. In September 2011, China issued a general plan for building a Guangdong-Macao in-depth cooperation zone in Hengqin, aiming to develop the place as a new platform to boost Macao's appropriate economic diversification and a new space that provides convenience to Macao residents' life and employment. Since then, an organization co-established by the Guangdong Provincial Government and the Macao SAR government, has started developing and managing the cooperation zone.
