Irina Bokova, former Director-General of UNESCO, visited Sun Yat-sen University in Guangdong from October 30 to 31.
On October 31, Gao Song, President of Sun Yat-sen University, met with Bokova and her delegation. Up to now, Sun Yat-sen University has hosted two UNESCO Chairs for "Science and Technology Policies" and "Sustainable Tourism in UNESCO Designated Sites." They agreed to continue scientific research cooperation in responding to global challenges, such as oceans, climate, environment, and energy, and strengthen the training of international organization talents.

On October 30, Bokova visited the Zhuhai campus of Sun Yat-sen University and gave a lecture titled "The Role of International Organizations in Globalization and Cultural Diplomacy", proposing countermeasures to alleviate climate change and solutions based on nature from the perspective of climate change and environmental protection.

Later, Bokova visited “Zhong Shan Da Xue” oceanographic research and training vessel in Zhuhai. After the visit, she expressed her hope that the IOC, a member of UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, could have the opportunity to visit and discuss cooperation in the future.

After returning to Guangzhou, Bokova enjoyed a folk music performance by students from the School of Arts at Sun Yat-sen University and discussed with professors from the university's two UNESCO Chairs.

Accompanying Bokova was Du Yue, former Vice Chairperson and Secretary-General of the Chinese National Commission for UNESCO (Ministry of Education) and former Director of the Africa Department, Sector for Priority Africa and External Relations of UNESCO.
