First typhoon of the year! Thunderstorms expected to cool Guangdong off

A tropical disturbance originally located near Luzon Island in the Philippines, has strengthened into a tropical depression on July 14, which is expected to bring rain, wind and temperature drop to Guangdong from 17 to 19, according to the Guangdong Provincial Meteorological Observatory.

As of 11 a.m. today, the center of the tropical depression was about 500 kilometers to the southeast of Dongsha Island in China. At a speed of about 10 km/h, it is forecast to move west-northwest into the eastern surface of the South China Sea from Friday evening to Saturday, strengthening into a tropical storm.

Later it is forecast to pass through the west-central Guangdong to the eastern coast of Hainan near the sea. With its force strengthening rapidly, it may intensify into a typhoon or a strong typhoon.

From July 14 to 15, most parts of Guangdong will be sunny with cloudy periods, enjoying a temperature of around 35℃ to 37℃. Some areas will even see highs of 38℃ to 39℃. In the afternoon, thunder showers and torrential rain are likely to hit some parts of the province.

Strong thunderstorms are forecast to affect Guangdong in the next few days. On July 16, most of the province will experience thunderstorms and localized rainstorms accompanied by high gusts.

The storm is forecast to bring moderate to heavy thunderstorms to the southern Pearl River Delta and western Guangdong from July 17 to 19. The highs are 34℃ to 36℃ in Heyuan and Meizhou, 30℃ to 33℃ in the rest of the province.
