Countdown begins for the opening of Shantou-Shanwei High-speed Railway

The Shantou-Shanwei High-speed Railway is about to open. Starting from Shantou Station, it will pass through eight districts or counties in Shantou, Jieyang, and Shanwei, and connects to the Guangzhou-Shanwei High-Speed Railway at Shanwei Station. With a total length of 162 kilometers and a design speed of 350 kilometers per hour, the line covers seven stations: Shantou, Shantou South, Chaonan, Huilai, Lufeng East, Lufeng South, and Shanwei, with Shantou and Shanwei Stations being the original stations while the others are newly built.

The trial run this time covers the section from Shantou South Station to Shanwei Station, with a length of 143 kilometers. On December 14th, reporters from Yangcheng Evening News took the lead in experiencing the trial run on train G8428 from Shanwei Station to Shantou South Station. Departed from Shanwei Station at 11:10 a.m., the train arrived at Shantou South Station at 11:50 a.m., taking approximately 40 minutes.

According to officials from the railway department, the Shanwei-Shantou South section of the Shantou-Shanwei High-speed Railway will be connected with the Guangzhou-Shanwei High-Speed Railway, which has opened in September 2023. At that time, it will take just one hour and 40 minutes to travel from Guangzhou East Station to Shantou South Station.

The train on trial run experienced by the reporters was operated by the Fuxing intelligent EMU, whose maximum speed reached 350 kilometers per hour during the journey. It is worth mentioning that the train is able to run smoothly even at such a high speed, allowing an upside-down mineral water bottle to stand still on the window sill.

Wei Zhihong, the train conductor of Guangjiu Passenger Depot of Guangzhou Railway Group, stated that crew members from the Chaoshan region will be their priority selection to work in that section. "Considering that some elderly Chaoshan passengers may not be good at speaking Mandarin, we intentionally arranged for local crew members to work at their service."

According to Jiao Shuxian, the chief steward of the catering company at Guangzhou Railway Group, they will not only offer dishes with local flavors along the way, such as the Chaoshan-style marinated duck wings, but will also provide typical leisure food with characteristic flavors from eastern Guangdong, such as licorice preserved plums, salted orange peel, and beef jerky, for the passengers.

It is reported that the Shantou-Shanwei High-speed Railway, together with the Guangzhou-Shanwei High-Speed Railway, Zhangzhou-Shantou High-Speed Railway, Fuzhou-Xiamen-Zhangzhou High-Speed Railway, Wenzhou-Fuzhou High-Speed Railway, and Ningbo-Taizhou-Wenzhou High-Speed Railway, will constitute a southeast coastal high-speed rail corridor of China – the Ningbo-Guangzhou High-Speed Railway. Connecting 15 cities in Guangdong, Fujian and Zhejiang Provinces, it will become an important link between the Pearl River Delta Urban Agglomeration and the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration. Once in operation, it will provide an important channel for cities along the way to better integrate into the GBA and connect with the eastern region of China.
