New species of toad discovered in Guangdong

A team of Chinese researchers has discovered a new species of horned toad in the Lianhua Mountains in Guangdong province.

Their findings were published on March 15 in the journal Asian Herpetological Research.

From 2022 to 2024, a biodiversity research team from Guangdong Polytechnic of Environmental Protection Engineering conducted several surveys in the eastern region of Guangdong.

The newly discovered species, named Boulenophrys elongata (莲峰角蟾), was found in a high-altitude mountainous area.

According to Lin Shishi, one of the authors of the paper, the discovered toad species resides in flowing montane streams at altitudes ranging from 700 to 1,000 meters.

It can also be found on the forest floor in the nearby subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest. Notably, the toad's slender body and limbs exhibit distinct differences from other known species belonging to the Boulenophrys genus.
