January 10 marks the third Chinese People’s Police Day. The Guangdong Provincial Department of Public Security recently summarized its performance in 2022 during a news conference.
According to the statement, public security organs at all levels in Guangdong province have intensified their efforts to combat violence, terrorism and cyber crime. The year 2022 witnessed a 6.4% decrease in criminal charges, a 26.2% decrease in robbery and snatching and an 11.6% decrease in homicides.
Even though the population, as well as the number of vehicles and roads, are increasing, car accidents and related fatalities in Guangdong fell 20.7% and 10.8% respectively.
January 10 also marks China’s 37th national 110 Publicity Day. In 2022, Guangdong’s 110 line received more than 489,000 crime reports, down 4.90% from the previous year; more than 793,000 public security reports, down 7.31%; and over 800,000 calls for help, up 11.60%. More than 1.27 million items of public concern were successfully handled by Guangdong’s 110, together with government hotlines including 12345.
However, it is worth noticing that there were also a significant number of erroneous calls and calls unrelated to public security which squandered police resources.
Guangdong’s 110 line received almost 6 million erroneous calls in 2022, severely disrupting the crucial and life-saving hotline. The police remind us that public security resources should be saved for those in greater need.
In the future, Guangdong’s public security organs will continue to diversify their service forms which already include 110 call services, 12110 text services and online police services. Maximum efforts will be made to increase the number of 110 hotlines as well as the number of phone operators, in a bid to provide public security services in a more professional and efficient manner.
