Customs officers at Luohu Port in Shenzhen, South China's Guangdong Province, recently intercepted a female passenger attempting to smuggle 616.43 carats of diamonds, totaling 2,003 stones, concealed inside the sanitary pads she was wearing, and the estimated value of the diamonds exceeds 270,000 yuan ($37,395), a report seen on the Wechat account of General Administration of Customs of China said on Monday.

During routine inspections of inbound passengers, the officers noticed a middle-aged woman acting nervously and behaving unusually after entering the customs control area without making any declarations.

Officers promptly stopped the passenger for further inspection. Upon examination, they discovered two transparent plastic bags concealed within the passenger's sanitary pads, each containing a quantity of colorless gemstones.

Subsequent testing by the industrial goods inspection center affiliated with the Shenzhen Customs confirmed that the colorless stones were synthetic diamond faceting. The case has been filed for further investigation, the customs report said.
