Preventing heat exhaustion and heatstroke

Symptoms of heat exhaustion include dizziness, headache, nausea, shortness of breath and confusion. When the body temperature rises to 41 degrees Celsius or above, the patient will experience generalized convulsions or coma, which is called heat stroke. If the patient is not cooled and given first aid in time, his or her life will be in danger.

It is adviced to heed weather warnings and take the following steps to help prevent heat exhaustion or heatstroke:

● Wear light-colored and breathable clothing to wick sweat and heat away.

● Drink more water, especially if you're active or exercising.

● Avoid caffeinated (eg tea or coffee) or alcoholic beverages.

● Avoid strenuous exercise or long-distance mountaineering or hiking, as high temperature, sweating and fatigue will consume extra energy.

● Get outdoors in the morning or late afternoon.

● When doing indoor activities, open the windows as much as possible and use fans or air-conditioning systems to keep the room ventilated.

● Avoid strenuous exercise in humid and hot environments.

● If you have to work outdoor, provide shade at the working place as much as possible, and take a rest in a cool place at regular intervals.

● Do not stay in a car parked outdoors.

● If you feel unwell, you should seek medical advice as soon as possible.
