Endangered white-eared night heron spotted in Guangzhou Shimen National Forest Park

Recently, a white-eared night heron (Gorsachius magnificus) was spotted at Shimen National Forest Park in Guangzhou. This marks the first documented sighting of the white-eared night heron in both Shimen National Forest Park and in Guangzhou.

The white-eared night heron is a national first-class protected species in China, with a very limited global population and distribution area. They prefer to inhabit dense forests in mountain valleys, hiding during the day and becoming active at night. Their elusive nature makes observing and studying them extremely difficult, giving them the title of the "most mysterious bird in the world."

Shimen National Forest Park is a national 4A-level tourist attraction with a forest coverage rate of 96.56 percent. In recent years, by strengthening ecological protection and implementing restoration measures, the park's water bodies have seen continuous improvement in the ecological environment, attracting many rare and endangered animals, such as the white-eared night heron, to inhabit here.

Next, the park will further leverage its ecological advantages, improve the ecological environment, and enhance the protection of wildlife species, in order to provide a better environment for the breeding and habitat of more rare animals and plants. Continuous tracking and monitoring of the activities of the white-eared night heron will be carried out, and its habitat range will be surveyed in order to better protect this species.
