In celebration of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and New Zealand, the New Zealand Consulate General in Guangzhou hosted a reception on May 18 in Guangzhou, capital city of south China's Guangdong Province.

Wang Xi, deputy governor of Guangdong Province made a speech at the reception. "Over the last 50 years of diplomatic engagement, China and New Zealand have enjoyed ever-strenthening mutual political trust and ever-increasing economic and trade cooperation," he said.

Wang further indicated that Guangdong deeply values and vigorously promotes the friendly relations with New Zealand. In recent years, the two parts have witnessed frequent high-level interactions, close cooperation in trade, investment, education and other fields. Meanwhile, the sister cities, the Tripartite Economic Alliance between Guangzhou, Auckland and Los Angeles as well as other platforms have been serving as bridges to promote practical cooperation in various fields.

New Zealand Ambassador to China H.E. Grahame Morton highlighted three themes New Zealand chose to mark the 50th anniversary of the diplomatic ties between the two countries, namely, people, planet and prosperity, with people being the most important.
"The strength of the New Zealand-China relationship is built on a foundation of people and cultural connections. And at its centre, sits Guangdong Province, which holds a very special place in our long-standing relationship," Morton said in his speech.

Following the Ambassador's address, the New Zealand Consulate-General also performed a waiata (Māori word for song) called Purea Nei.
Representatives from the governments of Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian, and Hainan, New Zealand businesses, education and tourism sectors, as well as foreign diplomats in Guangzhou attended the reception.
