Shenzhen has more supercharging stations than gas stations

Shenzhen had recorded 362 electric vehicle (EV) supercharging stations as of April 30, with the number surpassing the count of traditional gas stations.

The city had also seen an increase in the availability of charging piles for EVs, which now outnumber gas pumps for refueling petrol cars.

While domestic EVs typically require seven to eight hours for a full recharge through alternating current chargers, the introduction of direct current chargers has slashed this time to just one to two hours. The superchargers are capable of replenishing 80% or more of an EV’s power capacity in just 10 minutes or less.

Shenzhen debuted its first fully liquid-cooled supercharging demonstration station in June last year and announced its plan to construct Shenzhen into a city of superchargers. The boomtown has endeavored to achieve the goal by applying the supercharging technologies, promoting supercharging facilities, and building supercharging stations.

At the moment, Shenzhen has initially constructed a network with the supercharging services covering the whole city. Most of the supercharging stations are in key locations such as shopping complexes, bus terminals, and industrial parks.

The proliferation of supercharging stations has not only made EV charging more convenient but has also contributed to the growth of Shenzhen’s EV market. Data from Shenzhen’s power supply bureau for the first quarter of this year revealed a notable uptick in EV power refills, totaling 670 million kilowatt-hours — an increase of 10.9% compared to the same period last year. This surge in EV usage underscores the effective operation of charging facilities and the positive reception of EVs among residents.

Shenzhen has already rolled out a plan that seeks to increase NEV ownership to 1.3 million units by 2025. By the end of 2023, Shenzhen had surpassed the 970,000 mark in NEV ownership, with over 60% of new car owners opting for NEVs.
