Guangzhou's original acrobatic show Swan tours Russia

The Chinese acrobatic show Swan, created by Guangzhou Acrobatic Arts Troupe, is currently performing in Russia, showcasing its unique artistic appeal on the international stage. From September 19 to 28, the show is making stops in cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg, including a prestigious engagement at the renowned Mariinsky Theatre, often hailed as the "flagship of Russian arts". This tour coincides with the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Russia, celebrated through a series of cultural events themed "The China-Russia Year of Culture".

Produced in Guangzhou and starring national first-class actors Wu Zhengdan and Wei Baohua, who are also the founders of "Ballet on Shoulder”, Swan merges drama, acrobatics, and ballet to tell the inspiring story of modern-day Chinese acrobats through the growth of acrobat Yu Meng. The show draws inspiration from the classic Russian ballet "Swan Lake", blending its dramatic elements to craft a narrative that intertwines "reality" and "dream". The performance artistically explores the evolution of "Ballet on Shoulders", showcasing both the on-stage and behind-the-scenes aspects of this acrobatic reinterpretation. This work not only represents a Chinese transformation of classical ballet but also advances the innovative genre of "Ballet on Shoulder" within Chinese acrobatics. The innovative efforts have garnered accolades worldwide, including the Golden Lion Award at the National Acrobatics Competition and the Golden Clown Award at the International Circus Festival of Monte-Carlo.

When discussing the role of art in bridging cultures and enhancing mutual understanding, Wei Baohua, the leading actor, said, “In addition to showcasing Ballet on the Shoulder, we’ve integrated many elements of Chinese acrobatics into this production. And the music of Swan perfectly blends Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake with Chinese melodies. The musical and artistic expressions of both countries are perfectly combined in this show. Through the show, the Russian audiences will understand and gain insight into the perseverance of Chinese artists in the face of challenges. This is the magic of art—communicating in ways that language cannot.”

Moscow-based dance instructor Oksana watched the show with her students. She also reflected on her experience, saying, “True art transcends all languages. Although the entire show is non-verbal, I could feel the protagonists’ failures, pains, and internal struggles in their artistic journey. Their performances were incredibly powerful and conveyed emotions that didn’t require words. True art surpasses all languages.”
