Recently, a ceremony was held in Nanxiong, Shaoguan, to unseal and transfer the edible dock seeds carried by Shenzhou-16 manned spacecraft. This marks the beginning of the planting, seedling cultivation, and industrialization project for these seeds in Nanxiong. The seeds, after being delivered to Guangdong Yuanyuan Agricultural Technology Co., Ltd. and Guangdong Dameiyuanrong Agricultural Technology Co., Ltd., will be tested on land in Quan'an Town, Nanxiong.
Nanxiong is a major agricultural county with approximately 560,000 mu of arable land, accounting for about one-quarter of Shaoguan's total farmland. The climate is favorable, and the soil is classified as "purplish soil", which is known for its good aeration and rich minerals including phosphorus and potassium. The area also has abundant water resources, making it highly suitable for growing herbaceous plants such as yellow tobacco, rice, and edible dock. In recent years, Nanxiong has been actively advancing agricultural modernization, and the scale of its specialized agricultural industry bases has reached 100,000 mu.
Edible dock, also known as "protein dock", is a plant newly developed in China. It fills a gap in the cultivation of high-quality Polygonaceae and Rumex species within the country. This plant has diverse potential applications, including in food, health, medicine, animal feed, fertilizers, soil improvement, and environmental protection. It stands out due to its perennial nature, high yield, high protein, high nutritional value, and overall high value.
Experts and the project-holding companies, after nearly three months of preliminary research, have divided the development for the edible dock industry in Nanxiong into three phases. The first involves investing over 10 million yuan in infrastructure construction in Mixiashui Village, Quan'an Town.
The implementation of this project is expected to significantly boost the rapid development of the edible dock industry in Nanxiong. It will help optimize the industry structure, improve the industry chain, and create job opportunities for local farmers through land leasing and employment. This will contribute to cultivating a new generation of technologically skilled farmers and promoting sustainable income growth for farmers.
Nanxiong has received edible dock seeds that were carried by Shenzhou-16, marking a significant milestone in scientific experiments and representing a new opportunity for agricultural development in Nanxiong. Edible dock, known for its high nutritional value and broad application potential, is expected to yield high-quality, high-yield, and resilient new varieties after being sent into space.
