Experts note that dengue fever exhibits seasonal and cyclic patterns, and Guangdong is currently in the midst of its dengue season, potentially entering a high epidemic period warranting vigilance. As the weather cools, the dengue fever trend in Guangdong is expected to decline significantly by the end of the year.

The global dengue fever situation was severe in 2024, with significantly higher epidemic intensity than in previous years. As of the end of August, more than 10 million dengue fever cases and over 6,000 related deaths were reported in over 80 countries and regions worldwide, marking a threefold increase in incidence compared to the previous year.

Guangdong remains in its dengue fever season, with cases reported across multiple regions. The latest surveillance data from the Guangdong Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention shows that from October 7th to 13th, the province reported 2,005 new dengue fever cases, of which 1,985 were locally distributed across 21 cities. Foshan reported 462 cases, Guangzhou 436 instances, and Shenzhen 209 cases. The surge in dengue fever cases has led to an increase in patients at multiple hospitals.

Several experts emphasized that controlling the Aedes mosquito vector and preventing mosquito bites are the best ways to avoid dengue fever. Prevention starts with controlling Aedes mosquitoes—stagnant water is a hotbed for mosquitoes, and mosquitoes mean dengue fever transmission.

Citizens should actively take action to empty containers and remove stagnant water, clean up mosquito breeding grounds, and take personal precautions to prevent Aedes mosquito bites. If bitten by a mosquito and experiencing symptoms such as fever, headache, and muscle and joint pain, individuals should be vigilant and seek medical attention promptly.

Dengue fever has seasonal characteristics.  Experts predict that as the weather cools further, the dengue fever trend in Guangdong will decline significantly by the end of the year, potentially reducing case numbers.
