As universities, colleges and primary and secondary schools reopen, the 62-day summer travel rush in Guangzhou has officially ended. According to figures released by Guangzhou Metro, from July 1 to August 31, the metro network safely transported a total of 581 million passengers, with an average daily passenger volume of 9.37 million.
Additionally, the four intercity lines saw a total of 5.322 million passenger trips, averaging 86,000 trips daily, while the two tram lines served 1.9676 million passengers, averaging 31,700 trips daily.
This year's summer travel rush witnessed a 6% increase in daily passenger volume compared to June's average of 8.84 million, remaining largely stable with the same period last year. The average daily passenger volume exceeded 10 million in 12 days, with the highest single-day passenger volume reaching 10.67 million on July 19.
Three lines broke the one million passengers per day mark, of which Line 3 led with 1.94 million passengers, followed by Line 2 (1.18 million passengers) and Line 5 (1.11 million passengers).
Stations near popular tourist attractions also saw notable increases in passenger flows. Specifically, Canton Tower Station and Zoo Station recorded average daily passenger volumes of 67,000 and 26,000, respectively, representing a 60% and 45% surge from June.
To cater to the increased demand for shopping, tourism, and other summer activities, Guangzhou Metro enhanced its operations by boosting capacity on key lines, strengthening customer service during peak hours, and mobilizing over 5,000 internal and external volunteers to provide travel guidance. According to incomplete statistics, the service hotline received 575 reports of good deeds such as returning lost items and helping passengers during the summer travel rush.
Furthermore, as urban tourism continues to heat up, the four intercity lines and two tram lines also performed impressively during the summer rush, outperforming the same period last year. The Guangzhou-Qingyuan and Guangzhou East Ring Intercity Lines jointly transported 790,000 passengers, a 28.5% increase from last year. With the integration of the Guangzhou-Zhaoqing and Guangzhou-Huizhou Intercity Lines, the total passenger throughput surged, with the highest single-day figure reaching 137,242 passengers. The Haizhu Tram Line 1 and Huangpu Tram Line 1 saw respective growths of 16% and 5%, with daily peak ridership rates reaching 25,400 and 14,700 passengers.
Guangzhou Metro reminds the public that the "last mile" service for freshmen will continue until September 15. Passengers, especially freshmen, are advised to plan their trips in advance, avoid peak hours as much as possible, and cooperate with staff guidance during passenger flow control measures to ensure a safe and orderly travel experience.
Additionally, passengers are reminded to keep an eye on their belongings, take care of elderly, pregnant, or young companions, and seek assistance from station staff or by calling the 96891 service hotline if needed.
