Over 10m vehicle trips! Results of over 5 years since the opening of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge revealed

According to the border inspection station of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, as of 4:00 PM on April 27th, 2024, the number of vehicles entering and exiting through the Zhuhai Port of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge has exceeded 10 million since the opening of the bridge in October 2018.

The traffic flow at the Zhuhai Port of the bridge has been showing a rapid growth trend. In 2019, the number of vehicles passing through the port reached 860,000, and it surpassed 1.6 million in 2022. In 2023, with the resumption of normal customs clearance between Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao and the implementation of policies such as "Hong Kong vehicles heading north" and "Macao vehicles heading north," the port saw an explosive growth in traffic, with the number reaching 3.26 million, a daily average of over 8,900. As of 4:00 PM on April 27th, the number of vehicles entering and exiting through the Zhuhai Port this year has exceeded 1.58 million, a year-on-year increase of 113%, with a daily average of over 13,600 trips, and over 16,100 trips on weekends and holidays.

According to statistics, the border inspection station of the bridge has been handling an average of 69,900 inbound and outbound passengers per day this year, an increase of 56% compared to 2023, with a single-day peak of 144,000 passengers. Among them, Hong Kong and Macao residents accounted for 495,000 trips, or 60.06% of the total.

In addition to accelerating the connectivity between Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao, the role of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge in connecting the domestic and international dual circulation is increasingly prominent. Over the past five years, cross-border logistics through the bridge has seen high growth, with a total of over 1.91 million inbound and outbound freight trucks passing through the Zhuhai Port. This year alone, it reached 184,900 trips, a year-on-year increase of over 21.77%, 7.39 times that of 2019.

To adapt to the continuous surge in vehicle traffic on the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, the border inspection department has been continuously innovating management to greatly facilitate customs clearance. They actively promote data sharing, simplify border inspection filing procedures, and for drivers who have already completed border inspection "one-stop" driver filing or passenger fast lane filing, the system automatically shares the filed data, achieving paperless and electronic border inspection filing processes. In addition, the border inspection and inspection system for the 44 small vehicle lanes at the Zhuhai Port has been optimized and upgraded multiple times. Through innovative measures such as launching the "one-click login" auxiliary control system, implementing a new mobile inspection mode, and canceling the driver card reading process, the inspection process has been continuously streamlined, increasing the maximum hourly throughput of small passenger vehicles at the port from 440 vehicles to 1,100 vehicles.
