Foshan Airport set to launch the world's first modular terminal

Foshan Shadi Airport, often dubbed one of the "most low-key" airports in China, is undergoing a significant transformation! The new terminal is nearly complete and is expected to be operational by mid-November 2024. The new terminal will enhance the airport's capacity and passenger service experience, further promoting the economic, tourism, and cultural exchange developments in Foshan.

The newly constructed terminal spans over 11,000 square meters, featuring six boarding gates and two baggage claim areas, capable of accommodating up to 2.6 million passengers annually.

Overall, the architectural style of the terminal combines modernity with functionality, featuring a sleek and dynamic design. The roof boasts a wave-like shape, presenting a visually appealing geometric form. Its brown-yellow eaves add a vibrant touch to the aesthetics. The building's facade primarily utilizes large glass curtain walls, creating a striking contrast with the white walls, which enhances light penetration and a sense of spaciousness, making the terminal appear bright and airy.

Notably, alongside its fresh appearance, the terminal has significantly optimized check-in processes and security efficiency. Travelers can now check in on-site without the need for a 90-minute advance process, allowing for flexible and convenient check-in on the day of travel. Electronic boarding passes can be used for security and boarding, and the increase in self-service check-in kiosks further reduces the time required for passengers without checked luggage.

The Airport's new terminal is the world's first modular-built terminal, constructed with a steel frame made up of 299 modules. These modules are produced through streamlined and automated processes in a factory and welded by robots.

Why choose this construction method? Modular construction significantly shortens the project timeline, enabling earlier use and providing convenient, high-quality services for travelers at the Airport. The modules are prefabricated in the factory and then assembled on-site, minimizing environmental impact on the surrounding area while ensuring that current flight operations at the airport are unaffected.

The terminal is designed to serve until the Pearl River Delta Hub (Guangzhou New) Airport is operational. Once the new airport is completed, foshan Shadi Airport will transition operations to it. Therefore, as a transitional terminal, its modular design allows for future dismantling and reassembly, maximizing both its functional and economic value.
