Typhoon Shanshan strengthens, Guangdong braces for prolonged heat and thunderstorms

As the extended "Dog Days of Summer" draw to a close in most regions of China, marking nearly four days since the end of the intense heatwave, the northeastern provinces have gracefully embarked on their autumn journey. However, Guangdong province remains stubbornly outside the autumnal circle, with a relentless duo of heat and thunderstorms continuing to dominate the weather scene. The majority of municipalities in central and northern Guangdong are experiencing temperatures ranging from 35 to 37 °C, with the relentless heatwave maintaining a scorching grip on the region.

Forecasts indicate that between the 27th and 30th of this month, while the intensity of the sweltering weather in Guangdong will gradually ease, the province will see an increase in thunderstorm activity.

Detailed Weather Forecast Ahead:

August 28th: Heyuan and Meizhou will experience cloudy to overcast skies with moderate to heavy thunderstorms, which are locally intense. The central-eastern part of the Pearl River Delta, southern Shaoguan and Qingyuan, as well as eastern Guangdong, will see scattered thunderstorms with locally heavy rain. These regions may also witness short-lived intense rainfall and thunderstorm winds reaching up to 8-level gusts. Elsewhere in the province, skies will be mostly cloudy with isolated thunderstorms. The maximum temperature across Guangdong is expected to hover between 33 and 36 °C, with some municipalities in the central north reaching 35 to 36 °C.

August 29th: Southern and central Guangdong will experience cloudy to overcast skies with moderate thunderstorms, locally intense to torrential, accompanied by short bursts of heavy rain and thunderstorm winds up to 8-level gusts. Other regions will see mostly cloudy skies with scattered thunderstorms. The highest temperatures will range from 33 to 35 °C in Leizhou Peninsula, Shaoguan, and Qingyuan, while the rest of the province will see temperatures between 29 and 33 °C.

August 30th: Shaoguan, Qingyuan, the central-western Pearl River Delta, and western Guangdong will have partly cloudy skies with scattered thunderstorms, locally heavy to torrential. The rest of the province will remain mostly cloudy with isolated thunderstorms. Maximum temperatures across most of Guangdong are projected to be between 30 and 34 °C.

Typhoon Shanshan seems to become a super typhoon

Meanwhile, Typhoon Shanshan, the 10th typhoon of the year, has intensified from a severe typhoon to a potential super typhoon. Currently located south of Japan, Shanshan is traversing exceptionally warm waters and has shed its influence from a cold vortex, leading to a rapid intensification. The storm is forecast to move northwestwards towards the coast of Kyushu, Japan, with landfall anticipated between the night of the 28th and morning of the 29th at typhoon to severe typhoon strength (wind speeds of 13-14 on the Beaufort scale, or 40-45 meters per second).

From the 27th to the 30th, the eastern East China Sea and the southern Yellow Sea will experience winds of 6-8 on the Beaufort scale, with gusts reaching 9-10 and even 11-12 in some parts of the eastern East China Sea. Maritime traffic is advised to exercise caution.

As Shanshan strengthens further and its slow movement increases the risk of prolonged impacts, extreme rainfall, and severe flooding are anticipated in Kyushu, Shikoku, and southwestern Honshu islands of Japan. While Shanshan will not directly affect Guangdong, its northward progression may interact with a low-pressure vortex to the west, causing the vortex to shift southwards towards Fujian, Jiangxi, and northeastern Guangdong.
