Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration (SCIA), a prominent Chinese arbitration body, has strengthened its international presence with the appointment of former WTO Director-General Roberto Azevêdo and former Commercial Court Judge in England and Wales, Sir William Blair, to its council on March 1st.The appointment boosts the court's internationalization efforts, with international members now making up 60% of its 15-member council.
The SCIA, founded in 1983, is a pioneer among arbitration institutions in China and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. To ensure arbitration independence, the court underwent a statutory body reform in 2012, adopting an internationalized council with more than one-third of members from overseas.
Azevêdo and Blair, drawn by the SCIA's commitment to internationalization, have joined the court, bringing their expertise in economic globalization, multilateral trading systems, and international commercial law. Their appointments underscore the court's growing global influence and commitment to resolving commercial disputes internationally.
