Update | Preliminary investigation of Jiujiang Bridge accident performed

A seagoing ship collided Monday evening with an anti-collision pier of Jiujiang Bridge in Foshan, Guangdong and sank in the Danganzhou water area, according to a statement released by the Emergency Management Bureau of Foshan Municipality on April 23. There were 11 crew members on board, seven of whom were rescued, and four were missing.

A preliminary investigation found the accident was possibly caused by improper operation due to flooding, and the detail was still under further investigation, said Zhan Qianshang, director of the Maritime Safety Department of Naihai District, Foshan, in an interview on April 23.

In order to ensure the safety of the bridge, the temporary headquarters for solving the accident organized six experts to conduct a preliminary appraisal of the Jiujiang Bridge overnight. The investigation found the accident left no obvious damage to the main structure, but some scratches on the anti-collision pier of the bridge. And further appraisal of the safety of the bridge was planned.
