Guangdong police all out for safe Chinese New Year holiday

During the 7-day Chinese New Year holiday starting from January 21, traffic accidents in south China's Guangdong province decreased by 60.53 percent year-on-year and criminal cases by 1.51 percent year-on-year, according to a statement recently released by the Guangdong Provincial Department of Public Security. "No severe traffic congestion occurred on major roads."

"All the 128 grand celebration events were successfully held, and 187 4A-level tourist attractions operated in good order," the statement said. "54 large-scale firework displays were successfully presented in cities across the province, such as Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Shantou and Foshan."

The Chinese New Year holiday this year comes after China optimized its COVID-19 strategy. "Therefore, large flows of people and traffic were seen during the holiday, which intensified the pressure on the public security organs," the statement noted.

To ensure a safe holiday, Guangdong police devoted more resources to combating crime and reducing potential social security risks before the Chinese New Year, and busted a number of suspects for crimes including burglary, robbery, telecom fraud, extortion, gambling, and drug trafficking.

"Nearly 500 thousand police were on guard during the holiday, assuring the residents of a safe and happy festival," the statement said.
