This was the first news conference about high-quality development of the city’s districts held by the Information Office of the Shenzhen Municipal Government. Futian was also the first stop in a series of media research trips to all districts in the city organized by the office.

According to Pang, Futian is currently home to nearly 50 supercharging stations, twice the number of gas stations. There are 27 vehicle-to-grid stations in the district that account for one-fifth of the city’s total.

The district also boasts an extensive network of 46,000 varied charging facilities that rank it first in density citywide.

Vehicle-to-grid, or V2G, technology is smart charging tech that allows car batteries to give back to the power grid. In essence, it treats these high-capacity batteries as not only tools to power electric vehicles, but backup storage cells for the electrical grid.

Additionally, the added value of the new energy industry in Futian accounted for 21.7% of the city’s total last year, Pang said.

People’s well-being has been a top priority of the district government, she said. In the past five years, the district has spent more than 100 billion yuan (US$13.8 billion) on improving people’s well-being, which accounts for 80% of its total expenditure during that period. Futian is the only national-level ecological demonstration central district in the country and tops the China’s Top 100 Happiest Districts list.

Meanwhile, Futian aims to become a core urban area of a modern service industry with global influence by 2025, with the value added of its service industry and modern service industry projected to exceed 600 billion yuan and 550 billion yuan, respectively, Zhou Jiangtao, deputy Party chief and head of the district, said at the conference.

According to Zhou, Futian’s GDP exceeded 570 billion yuan in 2023 and its per capita GDP reached the level of developed economies worldwide. Its foreign trade surpassed 780 billion yuan last year, maintaining the first place among districts in the province for the 24th consecutive year. The number of newly registered foreign-funded enterprises accounted for nearly 30% of the city’s total, growing by 107.34%. The actual use of foreign capital increased by 81% and quadrupled that of 2019.
