South Africa officers shed light on Guangzhou-Cape Town collaboration

The 2023 Global Mayors' Forum & 6th Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation is ongoing in Guangzhou from December 7 to 9. Representatives from 63 cities and 9 international organizations from 37 countries participate in the event.

“We're looking for collaboration with Guangdong on bringing in entrepreneurs and digital technologies, through which we can foster industries and facilitate job growth,” said Kyle Ryann Carls, Chairperson of Future Planning and Resilience of Cape Town, at an interview with GDToday.

Carls said job creation is number one on the agenda to lift their people out of poverty. “Unfortunately, we don’t have many industrialized companies in Cape Town, so we are looking to learn from Guangzhou on entrepreneurship, technologies and breaking digital divide,” he said.

Tamsin Phyllida Thokozile Faragher, Principal Resilience Officer, Cape Town, South Africa, added Cape Town has a big appetite to attract solar facilities from Guangzhou as the city manages to stabilize electric supply and promote sustainable technologies, especially in the Atlantis Special Economic Zone.

This event is a collaboration between the World Association of Major Metropolises, United Cities and Local Government (UCLG), and Guangzhou City, aiming at exchanging advanced experience in innovative development of urban governance and promoting the comprehensive, harmonious and sustainable development of cities around the world.
