Despite rainy weather, Guangdong attractions remain popular during May Day holiday

The May Day holiday has come to an end, with Guangdong receiving a total of 38.819 million visitors during the period (from May 1st to 5th). Due to the continuous rainfall affecting the region, this figure represents a slight decrease compared to the same period last year, but an increase of 1.3% compared to 2019, with total tourism revenue reaching 24.52 billion yuan.

According to data released by Fliggy (Alibaba's travel platform), domestic tourism during the May Day holiday saw a significant increase, with double-digit growth in both average booking volume and per capita spending compared to last year.

In Guangdong, popular destinations during the May Day holiday saw a significant increase in tourist bookings, with Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Dongguan, and Foshan being the top destinations within the province. Cities such as Shanwei, Jieyang, and Zhongshan experienced the fastest growth in booking volume. Additionally, major source regions for tourists visiting Guangdong during the May Day holiday included Hunan, Jiangxi, Zhejiang, Shanghai, and Jiangsu.

Fliggy data also indicates that this year, bookings for self-driving tours during the May Day holiday, such as car rentals and charter services, increased by more than 40% compared to last year. The more flexible and adaptable travel arrangements offered by these options have encouraged people to explore new destinations beyond the classic ones, leading to strong growth in tourism for small cities, counties, and rural areas with better value for money.

It's reported that the Shunde Chuanlord Tourism Leisure Expo Park received nearly 180,000 visitors from May 1st to 5th. Despite the continuous heavy rainfall, visitors' enthusiasm for travel remained high during the holiday period. The park's "Rainy Day Travel Guide" was well-received by visitors.

Furthermore, according to park managers, the park has over 80% of its ecological plants covered by rain sheds, with indoor recreational activities numbering in the hundreds, ensuring normal operations even during rainy days.

As one of the country's most festive tourist attractions, the park continued its "Countryside Music Festival" during this year's May Day Golden Week, offering visitors a fun-filled experience of music and interactive games. Through multidimensional experiences involving sight and sound, visitors found solace and relaxation in rural music, which attracted many urban families to participate.
