The fourth Contemporary Theater Biennale opened in Futian, Shenzhen, on Friday and will run until Dec 3.

With theater director Meng Jinghui as its art director, the event brings together 12 productions from six countries and regions as well as nine script-reading events, two forums and three workshops.

“The biennale is a significant platform for young theater talent to display themselves,” said Meng at the opening ceremony in Futian on Nov 24.

Meng’s The Ballad of the Sad Cafe, which is based on the 1951 Carson McCullers novel of the same name, is also on the schedule.

The opening production was British director Ben Duke’s Juliet & Romeo.
