With its unique water, light, and heat conditions, Guangdong boasts that over half of its land is covered by forest. As China celebrates Arbor Day today (March 12), let's delve into Guangdong's achievements in green development.

Data show that the forest area of Guangdong is 143 million mu (approximately 23.6 acres), and the forest coverage rate is 53.03%. According to Chen Junguang, director of the Guangdong Provincial Forestry Bureau, by 2035, the province will complete the optimization of a forest stand by 15 million mu, forest care by 30 million mu, the proportion of mixed forests will reach more than 60%, and the forest structure will be more optimized.

Moreover, over 85,000 ancient and renowned trees are safeguarded through archival records, databases, and real-time video monitoring. Actions are also taken to protect these trees and their habitats, including rescuing and restoring endangered trees.

Guangdong also encourages youth participation in tree planting. In 2023, over 6,437 voluntary tree-planting activities were organized, involving more than 567,000 participants. It resulted in the planting of approximately 2.13 million trees and the establishment of 210 themed forests.

Furthermore, rural areas in Guangdong are now encouraged to develop industries with forestry characteristic, such as bamboo, tea-oil camellia, flower seedlings, and economic fruit according to local conditions. Rural areas are diversifying industries such as wood processing and ecological tourism. Now, more villagers are living a better life.
