Myriad migratory birds visit Nansha wetland in December

As December unfolds, a wave of cold air sweeps in, marking the peak migratory season for birds in the Nansha Wetland scenic area. Flocks of migratory birds can be spotted everywhere, gracefully settling or soaring through the air, attracting many residents who come eagerly to "meet the stars."

The Nansha Wetland hosts over 10,000 migratory birds, including several Class I protected species of China such as the oriental white stork, black-faced spoonbill, pied avocet and grey heron. These birds engage in activities such as foraging, flying, and leisurely strolling amidst the water grasses, creating a beautiful and harmonious tableau.

Nansha Wetland, a well-preserved and ecologically sound coastal estuary in the Pearl River Delta, spans nearly 10,000 square meters. It serves as a crucial replenishment station along the migratory route for birds. In addition to lush forests that provide a habitat for birds, the Wetland features several shallow feeding areas specifically designed for coastal migratory birds.

According to the South China Institute of Endangered Animals (Institute of Zoology, Guangdong Academy of Sciences), bird monitoring at Nansha Wetland has identified 185 bird species. Combining data from annual surveys and literature records, more than 200 bird species have been documented in the Nansha Wetland over the years.
