The tour is in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Spain, the 20th anniversary of the sister state/province relationship between Guangdong and Catalonia, the 20th anniversary of the sister city relationship between Guangzhou and Barcelona, as well as the 11th anniversary of the sister city relationship between Guangzhou and Valencia.

The Orchestra will also participate in the 30th anniversary celebration of the Verbier Festival, an international classical music festival that takes place every summer in the resort of Verbier, Switzerland. This is the first time that a Chinese symphony orchestra has been invited to attend the Festival. Its performance in the festival will be broadcast live through Medici.tv, the world's premier resource for classical music programming.

GSYO's performance is posted on the official website of the Verbier Festival.

Conducted by its Music Director Jing Huan, GSYO will present programs with both Chinese and western characteristics during the tour. It will also work with internationally renowned cellist Wang Jian to stage five concerts, including one in Guangzhou.
