Photos courtesy of the event organizers "Wing Chun," subsidized by the China National Arts Fund, premiered at the Shenzhen Poly Theater in December last year, and is in the midst of a national tour that has taken it to 11 other Chinese cities, winning rave reviews from critics and audience members alike. The show tells a parallel story in which Cantonese martial arts master Ip Man migrated to Hong Kong in 1949, began to take in disciples and teach them Wing Chun, and also includes a story about how a film production company tries decades later to shoot a film about Ip, and unravel the myths surrounding this low-key master.Unlike the fictional kung fu masters who often hail from ancient times and are often involved in glorious undertakings, Ip was real, tangible and more or less a member of the common folk.

Some 40 dancers, some in multiple roles, appear in different scenes, making it a stunning experience for the audience to appreciate the beautiful dance moves and at the same time gradually unravel a story told with ingenuity. Featuring Wing Chun, and using the gambiered Canton gauze as material for the costumes, the show brings into limelight two national cultural heritage items. The dance show is directed by Han Zhen and Zhou Liya, who have credits for such hit dance shows as "The Eternal Wave" and "Only Green." Feng Shuangbai, chairman of the Chinese Dancers Association, penned the script for the show. Young musician Yang Fan who provided the scores, stage designer Hu Yanjun, lighting designer Ren Dongsheng, costumes designer Yang Donglin, and multimedia designer Tan Yingjie are all top talents in their respective fields in China. The show is performed by the Shenzhen Opera and Dance Theater with Chang Hongji, Zhang Yashu, Feng Haoran and Xu Tianhui leading the cast.
