The traditional Chinese Xiaonian Festival, or the Little New Year, marks the start of the countdown to the Chinese Lunar New Year. It falls on February 2 in North China and February 3 in South China this year.
A Spring Festival celebration event featuring intangible cultural heritage kicked off on January 2 at Yuexiu Park, Guangzhou, and will last for two days. Over 20 intangible cultural heritage projects across Guangdong Province are being displayed, creating a festive atmosphere of the Year of the Dragon in advance.
Special New Year goods, handicrafts, and other intangible cultural items are sold at the on-site bazaar. These include Foshan woodblock paintings, Guangdong paper-cuts, Shiwan ceramic sculptures, Guangzhou olive carvings, chicken cookies, ginger candies, Daojiao zongzi, Shiqi rice wine, and Chaozhou Kungfu tea.
Beside the bazaar, several inheritors of Lingnan calligraphy art are also writing auspicious characters and sending them to residents for free.
Furthermore, the event offers immersive flashmob performances of lion dance, southern-style shuttlecock, Hakka folk songs, and Guangdong music, as well as Cantonese folktales meetings for the public at different periods. More activities like stamp collection will also enrich people's experience.
